Gramsdale Distillery & Visitor Centre, Benbecula — MacMillan Spirits Co. Ltd
MacInnes Bros were appointed as Principal Contractor on behalf of MacMillan Spirits Co. Ltd for the full renovation of a disused fish processing factory into a new whisky distillery and visitor centre in Gramsdale, Benbecula.
MIB coordinated a range of subcontractors throughout the works to keep the construction programme protected at all times — a critical benefit to the client, given the publicly funded element of the budget and the need for the distillery to meet its operational target date to remain financially viable.
A key feature of the completed design was the installation of the “Lighthouse” to the gable end of the existing factory building. This presented significant on-site engineering challenges: achieving a watertight seal with the existing structure without compromising the distinctive glass-lined design of the Lighthouse. To protect the prefabricated steelwork and glazing during transport, MIB used its in-house haulage service to ensure safe delivery to site within the most efficient timescales.
The works were completed on time, with the building handed over to the client in June 2023. MIB continues to support the client with plant hire and haulage for the specialised stills and distilling network fabrication — a reflection of the strong Principal Contractor and client relationship built throughout the construction works.
